Bussell: I don't miss ballet at all

Darcey Bussell said she doesn't miss being a ballerina

Darcey Bussell has revealed she doesn't miss being a world-famous ballerina.

The 44-year-old, who retired from ballet in 2007 after a career lasting two decades, admitted spending time with her two daughters has overshadowed her love of the art.

"I really appreciated ballet for what it is and I had a great time. But I don't miss it now as I value my time with my daughters so much," she told TV Times.

"Ballet is a hard craft. You can be a good dancer but you may not necessarily get noticed. It's a hard world in all the big classical companies. You need to have a personality and character."

Darcey, who is a judge on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, will present BBC Two's documentary Darcey's Ballerina Heroines, which begins on March 1.

"I loved making it. People are incredibly passionate about ballet and it's been great to delve into the history and look at its personalities," she said.

"Making the documentary brought back great memories. It also made me remember the pain and stress of performing."

While she was happy to put her ballet shoes back on for the 2012 London Olympics' closing ceremony, these days Darcey enjoys dance-based Zumba exercise classes.

"That's a lot of fun. I really enjoy it," she said.
