Bynes 'healthy' says co-star
Amanda Bynes is “healthy” and just “finding herself” for the first time out of the spotlight, according to her former Disney co-star Drake Bell.
The 27-year-old actress and Drake, 26, starred in hit US television series the Amanda Show from 1999 to 2001 and still keep in touch.
Reports concerning Amanda's mental well-being have trailed her for months following a string of increasingly bizarre behaviour and legal troubles.
She recently revealed she shaved her head and underwent her second of three planned nose jobs.
The cosmetic surgery followed Amanda’s arrest last month for marijuana possession which saw her briefly admitted to a psychiatric hospital.
She said on Twitter after seeing her mugshot she was convinced she needed work done.
But Drake isn’t concerned she’s unstable.
“Amanda and I are close,” he told America’s OK! magazine. “We worked together for years. I talk to her every day. She’s a sweetheart. I had lunch with her yesterday, and she’s brilliant. She’s good, and she’s healthy.”
Drake described Amanda as a “beautiful, artistic, funny soul”.
He’s urging her critics to give her some room so that she has time to discover who she is without the pressure of fame.
“She’s in a place right now where she is searching,” he said. “She’s ready to be her own person, and do her own thing. She’s experiencing life for real, without the spotlight, for the first time. She is a girl who is finding herself.”
Drake also said he’s confronted Amanda about her sudden change of appearance and demeanour.
He’s convinced after talking to her nothing is seriously wrong.
“I’m like ‘dude, you come off crazy.’ She’s like, ‘I know, but I don’t mean to. I just changed the way I look!’”
He challenges anyone in her position to try to cope.
“Let me follow you for 24 hours with a camera. Let me see what you got. If I followed you for 24 hours, you’d probably be like ‘get the f**k away from me.’ But Amanda’s a beautiful soul. She’s funny,” he continued, adding, “Anytime I’ve ever been with Amanda, she’s totally coherent, totally there, totally everything.”
Amanda is charged with possession of marijuana, attempted evidence tampering and reckless endangerment stemming from her May 23 arrest.
Apparently she threw a bong out of her 36th floor window when police arrived to her Manhattan apartment following several complaints.
A hearing is set for July 9.
