Caitlyn Jenner: The bolder the better
Caitlyn Jenner is delighted she's been able to "put people at ease" with her Vanity Fair shoot.
The 65-year-old star was formerly known as Bruce Jenner, but has transitioned into a woman. She revealed her name in the new edition of the magazine yesterday, alongside the first images of herself as a lady. In the accompanying interview, Caitlyn discussed the biggest fears she had before the shoot.
"I mean these pictures - [Annie Leibovitz], Vanity Fair, spared nothing doing it right, and the wardrobe, everything involved with it were just... the people were just great. It was, you know, two of the best days of my life. The pictures came out over-the-top great, you know, and I think people's reaction when they see it... I was always worried - you never wanted to look like a guy in drag. You never wanted to look like a guy in a dress, OK?" she explained.
"If you're going to do that, come out, you really have to look the part. You have to look very feminine, you have to be able to, what I call my presentation is extremely important because it puts people at ease."
In the accompanying pictures Caitlyn is seen in several different looks, along them a white basque, a tight red dress and a form-fitting black number. It was when she saw herself in the later look that Caitlyn fully realised what she'd been through.
Her transition was confirmed in April, when Bruce gave an interview to Diane Sawyer on TV. It followed months of speculation about the star's personal life.
"I had this rocking black outfit on, formal outfit, and I kind of, from a distance, looked in the mirror and I felt, 'Oh, my God.' That's the first time I'd ever really seen an image of me, of who I am. I mean over-the-top better than I thought it would ever be, especially at my age," she explained. "You know, you think it's kind of over with at that age. And seeing that image was powerful to me, you know, powerful. And I kind of looked at it and said, 'You know what? This is going to work. We're going to be OK with this, you know?'"
By far and away the most exciting thing for Caitlyn is the sense of freedom she feels. Having been used to hiding away, covering up things like nail polish and long hair before she transitioned, she is now looking forward to being open about her life.
It's not just Caitlyn who is thrilled by the change, her family are too. Her children Kendall and Kylie, as well as step-kids Kim, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian, have tweeted their support following her shot. And Caitlyn's older son Burt has been incredibly open about the change he's noticed.
"Even my son, actually, Burt said that to me one time. He goes, 'To be honest with you, I think Caitlyn is a lot better person than Bruce.' And I really have to - I think he’s right, because Bruce always had to tell a lie, he was always living that lie, every day, he always had a secret from morning till night. Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets," she explained.
