Carmichael 'spoilt' by Downton job

Laura Carmichael has admitted she knows she's been "spoilt" having Downton Abbey as her first TV role.

The 27-year-old actress was cast as Lady Edith Crawley in the hugely successful ITV series in 2010, following a brief stint as a GP's receptionist, and revealed it has transformed her life.

She told TV Times: "It's incredible. Edith is my first job on TV and I'll never forget how lucky I am.

"Hugh Bonneville, who plays Lord Grantham, has always said to me, 'Laura, they're not all like this one'."

Lady Edith has been seen falling for Michael Gregson (Charles Edwards) and she is now secretly pregnant with his baby, while he has disappeared.

Laura said it has been good exploring her character's less well-behaved side.

She said: "Edith can never just meet a nice simple man. But, you know, Gregson is complicated and interesting and I think that's appealing to her. They've lived through World War One and she knows life is short.

"I've certainly enjoyed playing the scenes where she's been a bit more rebellious."
