Celebs slam Donald Trump for Hamilton cast apology demand
The president-elect has placed himself at the centre of yet another controversy.
Chrissy Teigen is annoyed president-elect Donald Trump has called for the cast of Broadway musical Hamilton to issue an apology to his running mate Mike Pence.
Pence sat in the audience on Friday (18Nov16) to see the play, but his presence was not well-received.
Many fellow theatregoers booed the politician, prompting actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr in Lin-Manuel Miranda's masterpiece, to deliver an empowering speech to the incoming vice president.
"We welcome you, and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical - we really do," he said to Pence during a curtain call. “We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of all of us."
Dixon's address to Pence did not sit will with Trump, who slammed the speech on his Twitter account Saturday (19Nov16), writing: "Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen! The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!"
Donald's statements ignited an uproar in the Hollywood community, with supermodel Teigen calling attention to the fact he made several defamatory statements against women, Muslims, Latinos, immigrants and others throughout his campaign to become America's 35th president.
Chrissy tweeted: “Wow @realdonaldtrump is right. I can’t believe they would subject poor, innocent Mike Pence to such abhorrent, evil hate speech. Look who wants a f**king safe space now. The very thing him and his supporters make fun of as liberal political correctness. God, what a POS.”
Teigen wasn't the only celebrity calling out Trump for his sensitivity, with rock star Axl Rose tweeting: "'Hamilton Cast harassed Pence.' Do u ever stop whining? An apology?Seriously?!U won, this is the job,get on with it or get out of the kitchen."
Pop singer Pink thought Trump's apology demand was ironically humorous, noting: "Donald Trump has asked someone to apologize for being rude. Always good to start your Saturday off with a laugh."
Other celebrities were deeply disturbed by the president-elect's reaction. Donald just paid a $25 million (£20 million) settlement to over 6,000 students who sued him and his Trump University school for fraud and stars like Sarah Hyland, Alan Cumming and Jon Cryer have implored fans not to ignore the scandal.
Cryer noted, "Yesterday, our president-elect paid off $25 million to a bunch of students he defrauded. And today we're talking about Hamilton?!?".
"Also yesterday you paid $25 million to pay off people and bury criminal charges against you. Let's talk about apologizing for that!" Cumming declared.
