Channel 5 to show new series of The X-Files

Channel 5 has acquired the much-anticipated upcoming The X-Files series due to air in early 2016.

The hit TV show will return with original cast members Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as their iconic FBI characters Dana Scully and Fox Mulder.

The show's creator, Chris Carter, will be working on the new instalment which is due to be a six-episode series.

As one of the longest-running sci-fi shows in TV history, The X-Files ran from 1993 to 2002.

Part of the Channel 5 acquisition for the show includes a special 20-episode collection called The X-Files Essential Collection, which will feature Carter taking viewers through various episodes from the original series.

Apart from the two lead characters, other popular characters who will be returning are Walter Skinner (played by Mitch Pileggi) and The Smoking Man (played by William B. Davis), who viewers may remember was one of Mulder's most formidable enemies.
