Charles Dance as fictional Whip

Charles Dance plays the Chief Whip in Secret State

Charles Dance has said his new Chief Whip alter-ego is nothing like the man who has been making the headlines in real life.

The actor, 66, plays a fictional Chief Whip in Secret State, a new political Channel 4 drama beginning on November 7.

But he said his character in the latest adaptation of former MP Chris Mullin's book, A Very British Coup, is not cut from the same cloth as the recently resigned Andrew Mitchell.

"I don't think he's the kind of man to ride on his bicycle through the gates and abuse policemen, that's for sure," said Charles.

The actor plays Downing Street official John Hodder in the drama, which also stars Gabriel Byrne.
