Sean Penn and Charlize Theron have reportedly called off their engagement after spending nearly a year and a half together.

Charlize, 39, and Sean, 54, started dating in December 2013 after an 18-year friendship.

They were alleged to have got engaged last December following a trip to Paris.

But now it has been claimed the couple have called off their engagement, ending their brief romance.

According to Us Weekly, it was Charlize who decided she wanted out of the relationship.

The outlet claims the Oscar-winning actress made her decision following a recent holiday to the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France with her beau.

Sean has been married twice before – to Madonna from 1985 to 1989 and to Robin Wright from 1996 to 2010.

And in an interview with Britain’s Esquire magazine in March, Sean admitted he hadn’t ruled out the prospect of tying the knot for a third time with Charlize.

"You say I've been married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today,” he said. "So I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, 'Without tradition, new things die.' And I don’t want new things to die."

Meanwhile, Charlize spoke about her future with Sean in an interview on US TV show Extra earlier this year.

While the actress adopted son Jackson, now three, as a single mother back in 2012, the Mad Max: Fury Road star said she would definitely consider the prospect of extending her family with Sean.

“I mean, I’m so open to anything in my life,” Charlize replied when asked if she would like another baby during the chat. “I was never like, ‘Oh god just one,’ I was always kind of open to whatever kind of happens.”

Charlize and Sean also launched a professional relationship, as they are currently working on his forthcoming directorial effort The Last Face, which is due for release in this year.
