Chelsea Handler presented Charlize Theron with her Awards of Inspiration.

Charlize Theron was honoured for her contribution to the fight against AIDS at the amfAR Inspiration Gala on Thursday night (27Oct16).

The Monster actress was chosen as the recipient of the Award of Inspiration by bosses of amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS research, for her work with her own charity, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), which she founded in 2007 to support African youths in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Charlize was presented with the honour by talk show host Chelsea Handler at the Los Angeles benefit and confessed she had neglected to talk about sex workers during a speech she gave in her native South Africa in July (16).

"Despite our best intentions, sometimes people are still falling through the cracks and too many are not being seen," she said, according to E! Online. "It's tough to admit that as much progress as we've made, sometimes it feels like we're failing the ones that need us the most.

"We need big bold messages to fight apathy in our governments and in our own communities. And if we're going to end stigma, we're going to have to check our own biases and ask who are we missing when we talk about ending AIDS?"

She later shared a picture of herself accepting the prize on Twitter and wrote, "Thank you @amfAR for honoring me and my work with @CTAOP tonight. I'm more motivated than ever! #amfARInspiration #genendit."

In the lead up to the event, Charlize helped to raise money for charity by offering one person the chance to attend the gala with her if they donated to both amfAR and CTAOP on charitybuzz.com. The winner, chosen at random, and a lucky friend walked the carpet, sat at Charlize's table, and had a professional picture taken with her plus a hair and make-up sessions.

DreamWorks Chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg was also presented with the Award of Inspiration, which has previously been given to philanthropic celebrities such as Goldie Hawn, Jennifer Lopez, James Franco, Miley Cyrus, and Cher, among others.
