Charlize Theron wants to inspire women to fight for equal pay
The actress was impressed with the way Chris Hemsworth handled working with "three powerhouses" on the set of The Huntsman: Winter's War.
Charlize Theron has urged her fellow actresses to demand equal pay in Hollywood after she successfully renegotiated her The Huntsman: Winter's War salary.
The Oscar winner took action after the Sony Pictures hacking scandal in 2014 revealed leading ladies Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were paid significantly less than their male co-stars on American Hustle.
At the time, Charlize had signed on to reprise her role as Evil Queen Ravenna in a prequel to 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, and last year (15), it was revealed she had decided to address the gender pay gap herself by asking studio bosses at Universal Pictures to bring her salary in line with that of her male counterpart, Chris Hemsworth.
The new deal was reportedly worth $10 million (£7 million), and Charlize insists all she wanted was for film executives to treat their lead actors as equals.
"People ask me, 'What is feminism? To be fair!" she explained on U.S. breakfast show Today. "I think that we (women) should be valued just as much as our counterpartners, who we work with just as hard, and I think it's a conversation we need to have and hopefully there can be some real action placed towards it..."
"When you look at the world, what's 50 per cent of the population? Where is our place? Where is our value?" Charlize continued. "We bring half of it to the table. We have to start being valued that way."
Charlize was joined on the set of The Huntsman: Winter's War by two new female cast members, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, and the South African beauty reveals "pretty" Chris did well dealing with the trio of "powerhouses" on set.
"He's one of the greatest guys I've ever met, and I don't know a lot of guys who would have put up with what he put up (with)!" she laughed. "I mean, we were like three powerhouses going at him at all times, it was brutal, and he's completely unfazed by it."
And Charlize, who shared the majority of her scenes with Emily, admits she and the Brit became fast friends.
"We just hit it off like a house on fire, it was somewhat problematic!" she smiled. "I think from the first moment we met, we started talking and then we never stopped; we still haven't stopped!"
Even Charlize's four-year-old son Jackson is enamoured with Emily. Theron previously claimed her little boy had fallen in love with her co-star, and although she finds the news "crushing" as a mum, she commented, "At least it's someone that I love and respect, so I can deal with it a little bit better!"
