Christian Bale traveled to Aurora, Colorado on Tuesday to visit some of the victims of the movie theatre shooting.

The Dark Knight Rises star was horrified when he heard that 12 people were killed and 58 injured when suspected shooter James Holmes opened fire on the audience at the midnight showing of his new film last Friday.

The British actor went to see who he could at Aurora Medical Center of his own accord.

"Mr. Bale is there as himself, not representing Warner Brothers," an assistant to the EVP of corporate communications told The Denver Post.

Christian, who stars as Batman in the film, recently spoke of his shock at the heinous crime.

"Words cannot express the horror that I feel," he said in a statement. "I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

Carey Rottman, who was shot in the leg on the fateful night, posted a picture of himself on Facebook from his visit with Christian.

Holmes made his first appearance in court on Monday and is currently being held in solitary confinement without bond.?
