Cinderella a lighter note for Peake

The Village star Maxine Peake is swapping heavyweight drama for fairytales to record a new version of Cinderella for a free BBC app.

The actress, known for weighty roles in hit shows including Silk, will read the story as part of the updated CBeebies Storytime app.

Other stars lending their voices include Lauren Laverne and Michael Palin, who will read a Clangers story.

The Monty Python star recently signed up as the voice of the revamped version of the show about the pink, long-nosed, inventive and loveable mouse-shaped creatures who live on a small blue planet not far from Earth.

All the stories will be available on the app's library feature, which allows children to download the stories and listen to them.

CBeebies controller Kay Benbow said: "Our dedicated teams have created something truly amazing and this is a very proud moment for us at CBeebies.

"I'm delighted that Storytime and our other wonderful CBeebies app, Playtime, have been downloaded five million times collectively, showing how our audiences have embraced new platforms over recent years."

The other stories include the classic tale of The Elves And The Shoemaker and an another featuring CBeebies favourite Mr Tumble.
