Actor Clint Eastwood has backed Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in the forthcoming US presidential election and hit out at the political correctness of "the kiss-ass generation."

In an interview in Esquire magazine, the 86-year-old actor and director stopped short of endorsing Trump but praised the Republican presidential candidate for being 'onto something'.

"We see people accusing people of being racist and all kinds of stuff," he said. "When I grew up, those things weren't called racist. Secretly everybody's getting tired of political correctness, kissing up."

"What Trump is onto is he's just saying what's on his mind."
