Clunes 'liberated' by Doc Martin
Martin Clunes has been told that grumpy GP Doc Martin is not abrasive enough.
The actor's character in the ITV1 drama is known for being socially inept, pompous and arrogant, but Martin revealed that "surgeons have told me he's too nice".
He said he enjoyed the unsociable side of his TV alter-ego, adding: "I there's something quite liberated about his lack of social grace. It frees him up to say what he wants and get to the point, which few of us do."
Martin, 49, said he enjoyed filming the scenes in Port Isaac, the idyllic fishing village in north Cornwall, because it was so different to the capital.
"When you film on a street in London, I personally feel quite vulnerable and exposed," the former Men Behaving Badly star said.
"People drive by and beep their horns or yell at you to mess the shot up, but here, it's always felt like the most natural thing in the world."
:: The new series of Doc Martin begins on ITV1 on Monday, September 12.
