Coldplay's Clocks tops 6 Music poll

Coldplay hit Clocks has been named the greatest song of the decade by listeners to BBC station Radio 6 Music.

The 2003 single topped a poll to find the favourite tracks of the station's lifetime, although bands were limited to just song each.

Arctic Monkeys single I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor was runner-up in the poll, which drew votes from 100,000 listeners.

The poll comes at the end of the station's 10th anniversary year and and just a day after it celebrated becoming the biggest BBC digital station with 1.89 million listeners.

In 2010 the service was threatened with closure due to cost-cutting measures, but the proposal was rejected by the BBC Trust. The audience has almost trebled since.

In third position was One Day Like This by Elbow, making an all British top three.

Presenter Steve Lamacq counted down the top 10 with the entries in the 100 scattered throughout the day.

He said: "It's a good result for Coldplay, who were clearly one of the biggest bands of the decade."
