Colman takes horror to extremes

Olivia Colman has admitted she's so scared by horror films, she once had to wee with the door open after watching one with Jodie Whittaker.

The Broadchurch co-stars were flatmates while they shot the ITV murder mystery series, but Olivia said she was terrified by Jodie's viewing habits.

She revealed: "I'm a big chicken. On Broadchurch, Jodie Whittaker and I were flatmates and there was a really, really bad horror on. She said, 'I mean, it's not even classed as horror, it's rubbish', and I had to go and wee with the door open so I could see her. I'm terrible."

Olivia is starring in a TV adaptation of scary story The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield over Christmas, where she will play a biographer who sets out to interview the legendary but frail writer Vida Winter (Vanessa Redgrave) who, until this point, has refused to divulge the dark secrets of her past.

The Bafta winner said: "I was really excited and really nervous. I kept waking up in a cold sweat thinking, 'She doesn't like me', and then realising we hadn't met."

:: The Thirteenth Tale is on BBC Two on Monday, December 30.
