Cowell calls contestant's boss

Simon Cowell steps in to make sure one of tonight's X-Factor contenders - shoe shop assistant Kerrianne Covell - does not get the boot after missing work to audition.

He calls her boss to explain after the 23-year-old from Teesside told him she might lose her job for skipping work to perform Adele's One and Only.

Th ere are returns for some familiar faces with 22-year-old Geoff Mull, who previously made it to boot camp, and 25-year-old Jake Quickenden who made it to judge's houses in 2012, coming back.

Jake, who was rejected by Nicole Scherzinger, said this time is his "last chance".

He tells the judges: "I' m back to try and smash it. If I do, happy days, if I don't then I've got to get a real job."

There is also a blast from the past for former Spice Girl Mel B when Kayleigh Manners arrives to audition from her old stomping ground of Harehills in Leeds.

The 23-year-old fitness instructor said: "T he place where I come from it gets quite a bad name but Mel B was brought up in the same area.

"It makes you realise that people from that place can make it and can get somewhere".
