Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle has said that the next series will be the best yet.

The cast are currently filming the fourth instalment of the hit ITV period drama.

Brendan, who plays valet John Bates, told RadioTimes.com: "Series four is phenomenal.

"I'm going to stick my neck out and say this is our best series. Series four is absolutely phenomenal. It's a riot."

The actor revealed that the show's creator Julian Fellowes wanted to widen the scope of the drama.

"Instead of cutting back and cutting back and saying 'we have a success now' the producers want to expand," he said.

"Not just in terms of bringing in more characters, but the variety of characters and the situations they find themselves in. It's not going to last forever but we're all enjoying it very much."

It was recently announced that Hollywood star Paul Giamatti is joining the cast of Downton for the show's Christmas edition.
