Cumberbatch approves of Miller

Jonny Lee Miller says Benedict Cumberbatch likes his version of Sherlock Holmes

Jonny Lee Miller has revealed that Benedict Cumberbatch has been "very supportive" of his Sherlock Holmes role.

The Eli Stone actor said his Frankenstein co-star, who plays the famed detective in the BBC One show, has given the thumbs-up to his portrayal in US show Elementary.

"He sent me some messages, when he'd first seen the show, and it was really, really nice," he told Collider.

"I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have sent me a text message saying, 'You suck!' He's been very supportive, the whole way."

Jonny - who stars alongside Lucy Liu as Watson in the US programme - is thrilled with the reception that Elementary has received. The modern-day take, which is set in New York, is one of the most popular new dramas on American TV, and will be shown after the Super Bowl.

"It was a total surprise! It was a new thing to me. I wasn't aware of what the Super Bowl slot was. So, when you find out, you're just really excited because it means that we're doing good and we're doing something right. We're very, very happy," he said.

The 40-year-old added: "You never, in your wildest dreams, imagine that. Your first goal is to stay on the air, with any new show. To be given a full-season order was wonderful news for all of us. That was really hugely exciting."

Jonny and Benedict previously starred together in Danny Boyle's London production of Frankenstein, where they played both Victor Frankenstein and his Creature on alternate nights.
