Cumberbatch cameos in The Simpsons

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he has filmed a guest appearance on The Simpsons.

The Sherlock star had been in Los Angeles, where he had finished shooting JJ Abrams' Star Trek sequel, when he bumped into TV bosses for the hit animated series.

"I was at a meeting yesterday in the same place The Simpsons is recorded and heard there was a part going in an episode," he told UK InStyle.

"I said, 'I hate to muscle in here, guys, but could I record it?' Next thing, I'm standing in a room with all those famous voices: Bart, Marge, Homer, Lisa..."

Benedict - who will also be seen as Smaug the dragon and the Necromancer in Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings prequel, The Hobbit - next stars in BBC Two TV series Parade's End alongside Rebecca Hall and Rupert Everett.

"I wore a fat suit under my clothes and had bumpers in my cheeks. They attach like a brace to your teeth to make your face look plumper," he said.

The 36-year-old insisted that the show "is not at all like Downton [Abbey]".

"It's not soap opera, it's a little more hard-going, but also a wonderful story. You end up caring about these flawed characters," he added.
