Benedict Cumberbatch was fooled into thinking he had to wear a special face cream while shooting scenes in a laboratory for Star Trek into Darkness.

The British actor plays villainous John Harrison in J.J. Abrams’ new sci-fi blockbuster, while Chris Pine is Captain Kirk. Benedict was fooled into covering his face with sun tan lotion after he was told it was a cream specially formulated to wear during dangerous scenes inside a laboratory.

"We were in a really futuristic laboratory with lasers that were trying to split a target smaller than a human hair to create a continual form of energy. And I was like, ‘Wow, this is the real deal, what can't we touch? What’s safe?’” Benedict said during an appearance on UK TV series The Graham Norton Show. “I got on set and was told I needed to wear ‘neutron cream’ to protect me. I was gullible and did what I was told, it’s America and there is a lot of health and safety.”

Chris was also a guest on the show and recalled how seriously Benedict was about protecting his skin on the set of Star Trek into Darkness.

“And we told him he had to apply the cream in dots all over his face and there he was doing this really intense scene with sunscreen spots all over him,” he laughed.

Benedict soon realised he had been pranked, but insists he reacted to the stunt with good grace.

“I should have known. They had me, completely had me. It was really very funny,” he laughed.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the male members of the Star Trek into Darkness cast were determined to party while shooting the movie.

Benedict, Chris, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg enjoyed one particularly memorable evening of revelry, but are remaining silent about what they got up to.

"We had one mad night out in San Francisco - me and Zach and Chris and Benedict - that will forever remain a secret but it was a lot of fun,” Simon said at the UK premiere for the film. "But I wasn't the instigator. Can I just say, they're all as bad as each other. I don't even drink! Those guys, they were on their own mission!"
