Damian Lewis has joked Hugh Laurie was "lying through his teeth" when he advised the actor to take a TV role in Los Angeles.
The British actor has recalled the moment he was offered a lead part in NBC show Life. At the time he had just purchased a house from Hugh in Islington, London, and had a baby with his wife Helen McCrory. Damian phoned Hugh for his guidance about whether to accept the part.
"I'd never met him, I just asked his advice because he was doing so well in LA with House," he told website Mr Porter.
"And he said, 'It's lovely working out here, you should take the job and good luck.' He was lying through his teeth!"
Life was difficult for the star as he worked 70-hour weeks and his wife was expecting their second child.
He is now much happier shooting season two of Homeland in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The 41-year-old likes being able to visit his wife and children Manon, five, and Gulliver, four in the UK.
"It's great. I'm closer to home. And I don't have to work so hard because it's more of an ensemble cast," he said.
"So I just jump on a plane if I get a few days off. And the kids can come out and see me for the summer holidays, jumping in and out of the pool all day."
