Dan Aykroyd remembers former fiancee Carrie Fisher in touching farewell essay
Dan Akyroyd told Empire magazine that while he and Carrie Fisher never made it down the aisle, he hopes she kept his sapphire ring.
Dan Akyroyd has paid tribute to his former fiancee Carrie Fisher in a touching magazine essay.
The Ghostbusters actor looked back on his life with the Star Wars icon, who died in December (16) at the age of 60, for Empire magazine's farewell issue, published in memory of Carrie.
Dan and Carrie first met while he and John Belushi were cast members on Saturday Night Live, and lived together for several months in 1980.
Recalling their first home together, Dan wrote: "While filming Blues Brothers, Carrie and I fell in love and during the shoot she moved in with me into a penthouse suite in the futuristic, aluminum-clad Astro Tower, which I knew to apologise for. Carrie had the most refined eye for art and design."
After a few months of dating, the pair began thinking about marriage, with Dan joking they even had "blood tests for compatibility."
"Contemplating marriage, I gave Carrie a sapphire ring," he continued. "Subsequently in the romance she gave me a Donald Roller Wilson oil painting of a monkey in a blue dress next to a tiny floating pencil, which I kept for years until it began to frighten my children."
At its peak, Dan described his and Carrie's relationship as "soaring on laugh-filled exhilaration and a vibrant, wholly satisfying physical intimacy".
It was at this point that the couple decided to stock up on some hallucinogenic drugs and head on vacation to casino boss William Harrah's Lake Tahoe estate.
"We flew up to Reno, rented a wagon and checked in for three days of full-on weeping to Christmas classics. Certainly one of the planet’s greatest occasions where LSD was a factor," he recalled.
The romance came to an end after the couple moved into their new home, which Dan described as a "fixer-upper".
"Carrie said, 'It looks like it was abandoned by Fred and Wilma Flintstone.' The next morning she asked me to drive her to the airport and she flew to New York," Dan concluded. "Architectural reservations notwithstanding, Carrie wasn't shallow, we had a great time. She was also in love with Paul Simon. She married him but I hope she kept my ring."
Dan and Carrie's relationship ended later in 1980, when the Princess Leia actress rekindled her romance with singer Paul, who she had dated earlier in her life. She married Paul in 1983 but the pair divorced in 1984. Carrie later dated Bryan Lourd, the father of her daughter Billie Lourd.
Dan has been married to Donna Dixon since 1983, and the couple has three daughters together.
