Daniel Brühl: Who run the world? Girls!
Actor Daniel Brühl thinks it's great when films have strong female characters, as he's often been saved by the women in his life.
(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Hispano-German actor Daniel Brühl isn't surprised his new film Colonia focuses on a female hero, as he thinks women are often stronger than men.
The 37-year-old star is taking Hollywood by storm, scoring high-profile parts in movies like Rush and Woman in Gold.
His latest feature, Colonia, stars Emma Watson and focuses on a woman who gets drawn into the Colonia Dignidad sect while desperately searching for her abducted husband. And Daniel thinks it's great the film centres on a heroine.
"Women can do it. They are often much stronger than men," Daniel explained to Germany's TV Movie magazine. "My mother and my partner have saved me on many occasions!"
He only has words of praise for his co-star Emma, gushing about how great she is and how they got on instantly.
The star doesn't always need to rely on the women in his life though: he's built up a successful career all by himself. After starting out in German TV, he's now a regular on the red carpet, but he'll never forget his roots.
"The opportunities in Hollywood that have presented themselves over the past few years have been incredible," he grinned. "But I won't forget where I came from. I want to fight for European movies, particularly Spanish and German films."
Daniel was born in Barcelona to a Spanish mother and German father, hence his attachments to the two countries.
He also continues to work in Germany, with film Ich und Kaminski among his upcoming projects.
But not everything Daniel's been offered has been so tempting. He admits that even in Hollywood, it pays to be selective.
"I received a lot of scripts and thought it was amazing that I was allowed to pick from all of these!" he previously said. "But then there are roles among them where you just know that no one has even considered whether you're a good fit. For example, I'd struggle to play a 50-year-old cowboy from Texas. You have to deduct about 80 per cent from the enthusiasm you get, then it's about at the level of reality."
Meanwhile thriller Colonia will hit cinemas worldwide from January 2016.
