Danny Dyer given break from EastEnders to 'sort his life out' - report
EastEnders bosses have reportedly grown concerned about Danny Dyer's behaviour and drinking over the past few months.
Danny Dyer has reportedly been forced to take a break from EastEnders to "sort his life out".
The 39-year-old actor stars as Mick Carter, the landlord of the Queen Vic pub, in the BBC soap. However, after undergoing talks with EastEnders producers, who are said to be concerned about the amount of drinking he has been doing of late, Danny has apparently been told he must take an "enforced break" from the much-loved show.
"The producers are concerned about Danny for a number of reasons," a source told The Sun newspaper. "It was clear to onlookers he appeared very drunk at the National Television Awards. It is best that he takes some time out to sort his life out. He appears to be exhausted.
"As a result, Danny is not filming on the show at all. There is an enforced break that is expected to last a number of weeks. At the end of the day, he remains the biggest star of the show — so everyone is determined to get him back to his best."
According to the publication, Danny has stopped filming for the moment, but his absence is already causing problems for writers and producers of the soap. As storylines are filmed around six weeks in advance, the script writers have been scrabbling to come up with ideas to explain his temporary departure.
"Having Danny off is a total nightmare - it causes total chaos for both the writers and producers," the source added. "The storylines are worked out months in advance and no one was expecting him to be off. A lot of scripts had to be torn up and it’s caused a lot of behind-the-scenes chaos. It’s all anyone is talking about on set."
Danny joined EastEnders in 2013 and makes around $500,000 (£400,000) a year. He is contracted to stay on the show until October (17).
At the National Television Awards in January (17), Danny told The Sun he had attempted to stop drinking.
"The beginning of the year is a month ago now," he explained. "I mean, I did try to give up drinking but - as you can see - I’m now sucking on a lager."
An EastEnders spokesperson declined to comment when approached by The Sun.
