Football legend David Beckham is relieved when youngsters recognise him as he gets older, he told a newspaper interviewer.

After answering questions from some "over-excited eight-year-olds" from a primary school, Beckham, 40, told The Daily Telegraph that he had been "slightly concerned" they would not know who he was.

He said: "Well, you start realising as you get older that there are some kids who don't know who you are."

Asked if that is weird for him, he says: "It is a little bit."

Quizzed about his unfailing politeness, he says: "Well, my parents would be so annoyed if I wasn't. It was the way I was brought up. Until the day he passed away, my grandad was unbelievably strict with me, and I want my children to have that, too. From two years old, they have to know their 'pleases' and their 'thank yous' and their 'you're welcomes'.

"My boys know that they let ladies or girls through the door before they go through the door. It's so important to have manners and treat people from all walks of life the way they should be treated."

He also thinks it is important to pass on to his children the hard work ethic his parents instilled in him. "I could just sit back and watch telly, but I don't want to do that," he says.
