David Beckham hits back at criticism over kissing daughter on the lips
David Beckham sparked a debate when he posted the original picture of himself kissing Harper on the lips.
David Beckham has defended a picture in which he kisses daughter Harper on the lips, insisting it's a way he shows his children love.
The former soccer star shares four children with Spice Girls singer turned designer Victoria - Brooklyn, 18, Romeo, 14, Cruz, 12, and five-year-old Harper.
The couple frequently post pictures of themselves with their offspring online, but a snap of David and Harper during a family holiday in Tanzania last month (Jun17) caused controversy among some fans. The Instagram image shows the sportsman giving Harper a kiss on the lips and is captioned, "Kiss for Daddy", alongside a heart emoji, but some people suggested it's not appropriate for parents to kiss their children on the mouth.
However, in a Facebook Live session on Monday (03Jul17) David hit back at the criticism and said that aside from eldest child Brooklyn, he kisses all his kids on the lips.
"I actually got criticised for kissing my daughter on the lips the other day... I kiss all my kids on the lips," he said, admitting he was stunned by the response the image triggered. "Brooklyn maybe not. Brooklyn is 18, so he might find that a little strange, but I'm very affectionate with the kids. It's how I was brought up - and Victoria - and it's how we are with our children.
"We want to show our kids love and we protect them, look after them and support them."
Last year (16) Victoria also sparked a debate with a similar picture of herself kissing Harper as they enjoyed the swimming pool on a family holiday.
While some criticised her, others applauded the fashion star for being unconcerned about what others thought of the affectionate display towards her only daughter.
Elsewhere in his Facebook Live chat David spoke more generally about parenthood, gushing, "Having children is the most special thing in the world."
