David Burtka: LA left me lost

Neil Patrick Harris' husband David Burtka has joked it takes a "village" to look after their kids.

The How I Met Your Mother star tied the knot with David Burtka last September after dating for ten years, with Sir Elton John performing at their intimate reception.

Things are going well for the couple now and both have successful careers in TV, film and Broadway. David didn't always feel so content with life though, as he recalled to New York Post's Page Six.

“It’s been a long road. A humble Dearborn beginning. Secretary mom, dad teaching handicapped children. Working for what they had. Eventually I moved to LA but, not good for me, I felt rejected," he explained. "So I stopped acting and, needing to feel good inside, became a chef. Then 11 years ago I met Neil Patrick Harris. We moved to New York, which we love. We have twins, who are now four, and we’re married."

Neil has been busy recently after hosting the Oscars last month and having stints in projects such as last year's flick Gone Girl and TV show American Horror Story. Meanwhile David is set to star in the stage production It Shoulda Been You, which opens next month and has him feeling "butterflies" from the nervousness.

When both dads are busy, their kids Harper Grace and Gideon Scott have plenty of activities to keep them busy.

“One day it’s swimming, another’s dance class. When Neil did Hedwig [and the Angry Inch, Broadway show] with all-day rehearsals, I took the reins," David added. "Physically, he couldn’t take the kids to school. We have help, but now Neil’s being dad and he feeds them dinner. Listen, when you have kids it takes a village.”
