Deborra-Lee Furness: Don't call me lucky

Deborra-Lee Furness takes offence when people tell her she's lucky to have Hugh Jackman as her husband.

The couple said their vows in 1996 and enjoy a happy marriage with their adopted children Oscar, 14, and nine-year-old Ava.

However, Deborra-Lee finds people often tell her how fortunate she is to have Hollywood hunk Hugh as a spouse.

"That to me is a putdown. [It's] like you suggesting I won the chook raffle," she fumed in the latest issue of The Australian Women's Weekly.

Her interview coincides with landing the number ten spot on the magazine's first ever power list, marking her as the tenth most powerful woman in Australia.

She goes on to say her lifestyle is not the result of chance, as she believes that every single individual "creates their own destiny".

"If you want something, you put it out there with good intention and you realise it," she added.

She also suggests looks can be deceiving, and while many may envy her life married to a film star no one can know what goes on behind closed doors

"When people look at my life, they don't know the challenges [I face], just like I don't know someone else’s [challenges]," she sighed.

"With every privilege, comes responsibility and challenges."

Hugh, 45, and Deborra-Lee met on the set of Australian TV show Correlli in 1995. Like her husband the 58-year-old also enjoys a successful career, with acting, writing and producing credits to her name. She also campaigns tirelessly for the streamlining of international adoption laws and founded Adopt Change, an organisation fighting for adoption law reform.
