Demi Moore has spoken about the devastating effect her divorce from Bruce Willis had on daughter Rumer's self esteem.

The 26-year-old star is the eldest child of Demi and Bruce, who are also parents to 23-year-old Scout and Tallulah, 21. The pair married in 1987 but filed for divorce 13 years later and the actress was horrified by the effect if had on Rumer.

"When their father and I decided to divorce it probably had the biggest impact on her,’' Demi explained. "Media attention is tough when you are a kid, it is definitely weird to have that be such public knowledge."

The star was talking during a video interview on talent TV show Dancing With the Stars, where Rumer is competing.

Rumer was the first to take to the stage last night, performing a Viennese Waltz with her partner Val Chmerkovskiy. Demi is fiercely proud of what her daughter is achieving, especially as Rumer's confidence took a nose dive in the period after her parents' split.

"There really was not anything I could do to stop it, I mean, her self esteem was nothing, I could only just keep loving her and loving her until she could love herself," she recalled.

"When she said she wanted to do Dancing With the Stars, to be honest, my whole insides were screaming, ‘No.' But one of the most beautiful things I have witnessed is watching her passion become greater than her fear.

"It has nothing to do with her being my kid, or Bruce’s kid, it has everything to do with just who she is."

Rumer's dance was inspired by raunchy movie adaptation 50 Shades of Grey and she was praised by the judges. Demi was there to watch and gave her daughter a huge cuddle afterwards.

"How could I not be proud of her?" she said. "It has been incredible to watch, I am truly in awe as she makes it all seem so effortless. I am mostly proud of how hard she has worked as she has given it 100 per cent.

"Regardless of where it goes that is something she will always take with her."

During one section of the program Demi was seen pouring over old family photos, prompting her to suggest Rumer looked like "a little, magical elf" when she was born.
