Patrick Dempsey was reportedly cut from Grey’s Anatomy after his co-star found out about an “inappropriate relationship”.

The 49-year-old actor left fans of the hit ABC medical drama shocked recently when his character Dr. Derek Shepherd was killed off. The decision to leave follows a few months after the actor’s wife Jillian Fink filed for divorce following 15 years of marriage. But now it has been claimed that the departure from the show and the breakdown of his relationship went hand in hand after an “inappropriate relationship” with a woman on the programme.

“Patrick had an inappropriate relationship with a young woman who worked on the set,” a source told In Touch . “Ellen Pompeo found out and was angry because she’s close friends with Jillian, so of course, she told her.”

Grey’s creator Shona Rhimes also got wind of the alleged relationship and reportedly made the decision to write Patrick out of the show.

“[She] has no patience for that kind of behaviour” the insider added.

While Patrick has yet to comment on the new claims, he did admit in previous interviews that his work had potentially played a part in his marriage unravelling.

“It would be nice to be one-pointed and not spread so thin sometimes," he told the Associated Press while at a race in Daytona Beach, Florida. "I think where I'm going is to really streamline and be much more specific in balancing things a little bit better than I have in the past.”

Patrick and Jillian have three children together, daughter, Talula, 13, and twin sons, Darby and Sullivan, eight.
