Diane Kruger: I was so stupid

Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger thought she was "so accomplished" until she turned 30 and realised she "didn't know sh*t".

The 36-year-old actress thought she knew it all during her 20s. However, upon entering a new decade in her life, she came to a shocking conclusion.

"Honestly, for a long time I felt that I was so accomplished. 'Oh, I speak three languages, I travel the world, I've seen so many things.' But when I turned 30 I realised I was an idiot. I didn't know sh*t about anything," she told the latest UK edition of Marie Claire magazine.

Since moving to Los Angeles a few years ago, Diane has been more open about her visits to a therapist. The German-born beauty appreciates the American attitude to talking through issues.

"My friends ask, 'What's wrong with you?' But here everyone talks about it, and I really like that about America," she said. "Therapy's not about getting help; it's facilitating yourself to deal better with life in general."

Diane didn't have the easiest of childhoods. Her father was an alcoholic and she hasn't seen him since she was 16, previously claiming it's "too late" to repair the rift.

She admits her fraught relationship with her dad had a big impact on her love life in the past.

"Oh, I'm sure I punished many boys for my lack of a father figure. And I'm sure I dated many men who were much older than the men I should have been dating. But at the end of the day, I'm not bitter. I love men. I want a family for myself. I'm not angry with him anymore," she said.

Diane is happily settled with long-term boyfriend, actor Joshua Jackson. Engagement rumours have been circulating about the pair recently, but neither star has commented on the speculation.

Diane is happy she shares the same values as Joshua, but insists that every romance takes work to maintain whatever your circumstances.

"All relationships are hard. It doesn't matter what job you have, or how famous or miserable or poor you are. It's about commitment. The hard part is the timing. When you meet someone, are you ready to make them your number-one priority," she explained. "There's never going to be a role more interesting than my own life. I'm grateful that I met a person who feels the same not just about me, but also about our relationship. But therapy helps, too."

The couple live in Los Angeles, in a house "in the middle of nowhere". Diane loves escaping to her remote home and recently revealed she and Joshua swim naked in their pool at night.

Joshua was apparently embarrassed by Diane's remarks, but the blonde remains unrepentant about her comments.

"Look, it gets so hot in the summer, it's like 80 degrees at night, and you're in the middle of nature," she smiled. "Wouldn't you?"
