Diane Kruger: Women manipulate
Diane Kruger thinks all women "instinctively" know how to irritate men.
The 37-year-old actress was married to Guillaume Canet for five years in her 20s and is now in a long-term relationship with Joshua Jackson. In her movie A Perfect Plan Diane portrays Isabelle, a woman who tries to break her family's first marriage curse by wedding a stranger so her union with her fiancé lasts the distance.
Although she isn't totally like the character, Diane can see some similarities.
"Well, maybe not quite like Isabelle but I've certainly been guilty in the past of being slightly manipulative when it comes to boyfriends," she told Stylist magazine. "I think, as women, we know instinctively how to push men's buttons. We know which fights to pick and which to leave. And we know that if we pick a certain type of dress, we'll get a certain type of reaction."
The actress has an interesting take on love, believing it is both a force of nature and something which people can make decisions about. For Diane, falling in love is the easy part - it's maintaining the relationship which is the important part.
"It's a combination of both. At least, that's been true for me," she said. "As you grow older, you realise a lot of it has to do with timing and what phase you're in. Obviously, you don't choose the person you fall in love with. But whether or not you, as a person, are ready for that love is a different question."
Much as she enjoyed playing Isabelle, Diane doesn't buy in to bad luck and curses. She believes there is a much more reasonable explanation as to why things go wrong for some people.
"No, I believe in karma. That what you put out into the universe is going to come back to you in some way," she said. "If you're in a bad mood and you're not very nice to people, usually you get that same reaction back. It's a Buddhist way of thinking - just common sense, really."
