Dion: Mother wanted husband ‘dead’

Céline Dion jokes that her mother would have liked to kill the singer’s husband René Angélil when they began dating.

The 45-year-old singer met her spouse, who is 26 years her senior, when she was just 12 years old.

By the time she was in her late teens, Céline was certain of her love for the music manager and her mother was fraught with worry about the May-December romance.

“Maybe [when I was] 19 years old, [I told her] that I have some really strong feelings for René and he’s been married twice and he had three children,” Céline told Access Hollywood. “And she tried everything to kill him and to make me snap out of it!

“I was very frustrated and mad at her at first because I said, ‘It’s not just like a crazy thing. It’s real!’”

The My Heart Will Go On hitmaker eventually convinced her 13 siblings and mother her relationship with René was genuine.

Regardless of their feelings, the diva admits she would have continued a relationship with him anyway.

“She had no choice. Love won,” Céline said. “It’s because the moms fight all the way, like, ‘This is wrong, this is not your age, this is not what I [hoped for you] - are you sure? I’m afraid you’re going to make a mistake.’”

Céline and René married in 1994 and now share three sons, 12-year-old René-Charles and nearly-three-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy.

She would be alarmed if her boys did the same thing to her.

“If I reversed roles — when I had my first son, RC, if I think of him and he comes [to me] with this lady who has kids and she’s 45 and she thinks she knows best, [I’d be] like, ‘Take your hand off of my son,’” she confessed.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to do it. So, [my mother] is a saint. God bless her heart.”
