There was a Doctor Who double at this year's National Television Awards with its stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan both picking up prizes.

Smith won the gong for best male drama performance, while Gillan, who plays his sidekick Amy Pond, picked up female equivalent.

There was also a victory for ITV1's hit Downton Abbey with the country house show picking up the best drama award.

EastEnders actress Jacqueline Jossa picked up the newcomer award for her performance as Walford's troubled teen Lauren Branning. There was also a win for Coronation Street's Katherine Kelly, who picked up the award for serial drama performance for her role as Becky McDonald.

Corrie itself nabbed the serial drama gong. Accepting the award, Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Webster, dedicated it to Betty Driver, who played barmaid Betty Williams until her death at the age of 91 last year.

There were awards for Celebrity Juice, which picked up the comedy panel show prize, Alan Carr, who carried off the talk show award, and Ant and Dec. The Geordie pair have won the entertainment presenter award every year since 2002.

The award for the best talent show went to The X Factor, while This Morning won the factual programme award.

Ant and Dec took to the stage for a second time to pick up the award in the reality programme category for I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! The outstanding contribution award went to Take That star and X Factor judge Gary Barlow, who presenter Chris Moyles referred to as the nation's new "sweetheart".

This Morning was announced as the winner in the factual programme category. The X Factor walked away with the talent show award, while Outnumbered was voted best situation comedy.

The special recognition award went to chat show host Jonathan Ross and was presented by Sir Bruce Forsyth.
