Downton's Dockery loves acting mean

Michelle Dockery likes playing a character so different to herself

Michelle Dockery has said she loves playing a mean girl in Downton Abbey because it's so different to how she is in real life.

The star of the hit ITV period drama, who plays Lady Mary Crawley, said she is shy and nice really, but finds it liberating to play someone the opposite of herself.

She told The Sun: "Mary is a very different character to who I am and she can be incredibly mean - and I really love playing those moments when she is. Yeah, it's awful but I love being a b***h!

"I can be very shy but when I act I'm a complete extrovert and there is a kind of buzz about that and about losing control.

"That crazy, liberating thing of playing something that's nothing like yourself - it's what I love about it. I'm not really a b***h, I'm very nice! But it's those parts of ourselves that we're afraid of that we don't tap into as much and that's what's so enjoyable about being an actor."

Michelle returns in series four of Downton Abbey this autumn.

Don't get involved with a hidden intrigue. The drama will be exciting at first, but eventually you will tire of keeping secrets. If someone is interested in you romantically, you shouldn't have to sneak around together. An oppressive work situation may tempt you to quit your job. Try not to discuss your plans with colleagues. You don't want a rival to tell your employer about your resignation until you're ready to tender it. Protect your interests at all costs.More
