Ed Sheeran returns to social media a year after he said he was taking a break

Singer Ed Sheeran has returned to social media exactly a year after he announced he was taking a break.

The singer changed his Instagram and Twitter profile photos to a light blue picture and posted the same blue photograph on both platforms.

Last year he announced he was "taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while".

The singer posted a message to his 5.9 million Instagram followers saying: " I've had such an amazing ride over the last five years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I'm taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed."

Sheeran, 25, confirmed he would be releasing a third album and his return to social media has prompted fans to speculate about whether it means his new music will be making an appearance soon.

The Thinking Out Loud singer wrote this year's X Factor winner's single, When Christmas Comes Around, which bookies have speculated could see the show's winner, Matt Terry, clinching the coveted Christmas number one.

The singer gave his first official performance of the year last month, when he returned to the stage for a charity gig at the Natural History Museum.

The Suffolk-born singer made headlines just days before the performance, after reports said he was cut on the face by Princess Beatrice during a party prank.

Showing off a scar on his cheek, Sheeran told the charity audience: ''It's nice to be back. I've had a whole year off. I went to Japan for about a month and hung out with Japanese people. Got my face cut open, anyone read about that?''

The Sun reported Beatrice was pretending to "knight" singer James Blunt with a ceremonial sword during a party, and had not realised Sheeran was behind her.

The event was to raise funds for the East Anglia's Children's Hospices.
