Elle Fanning: Angelina isn't evil

Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie

Elle Fanning is a big fan of Angelina Jolie's and says she's much nicer than the character she portrays in Maleficent.

The two Hollywood actresses are currently starring alongside each other in Disney's Maleficent, which see's Angelina play the evil fairy from the film's title.

Far from being nasty in real life, Elle says the Oscar winning star couldn't be further from her onscreen alter ego. Both leading ladies were in London last night for a special event held at Kensington Palace in honour of the film.

"No, no she's not [evil]," Elle giggled to Cover Media. "She's one of the nicest ladies in the world. She's unbelievable and just to see her work and be a mom. Her kids were always on set."

As well as watching her mother work, Angelina's youngest daughter Vivienne also took on the role of toddler Aurora, the same role Elle portrays in the older form.

Working on a Disney production was a career highlight for 16-year-old Elle, who has always favoured Sleeping Beauty.

Maleficent tells the famous fairytale from the perspective of the story's evil baddie.

"It was a dream come true to kind of be welcomed into the Disney community, as well as to say, 'I'm Aurora,' which is so weird! I am not Aurora... She is Aurora, the drawing is Aurora. I just tried to get inspiration for her.

"She was my favourite always, I felt like I related to her the most, you know each princess has different colour hair, different dress. She had blonde hair and the pink dress and that was what I related to the most," she gushed.

Elle also assures lovers of the original 1959 animated film that the new instalment will bring fans a much more rounded understanding of the film's themes.

"The original story, you have a lot of questions, it's also from Sleeping Beauty's point of view, so this one is from Maleficent's and all those questions are answered, which is nice. And you kind of get the back story and understand why she's so angry, which leads up to Maleficent actually cursing a baby. So what made her so evil.

"I think it's a little more gothic; it definitely had dark qualities to it because it's from the villain's point of view, Disney's never done that, pretty much, before. But also it had the lightness in it as well and also it's a whole new world you've never seen before, created digitally," Elle explained.
