Ellen Page feared panic attack
Ellen Page was the most nervous she’s ever been when she came out.
The 27-year-old actress talked about the moment she revealed she was gay with Ellen DeGeneres on the comedian’s talk show. In the episode that will air on May 27, the X-Men: Days of Future Past star relived how she felt at the Time To THRIVE Conference in Las Vegas in February.
“[I was] the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life, for sure,” the actress told the 56-year-old star.
“I think my biggest fear of doing it was even just having a panic attack quite frankly. But I was just so ready to do it and…so excited to do it. So it was a combination of just such thrill to finally be at that place in my life where I was able to do that and grateful to have that moment…”
Page also paid tribute to DeGeneres who came out as a lesbian on the cover of Time magazine back in 1997. The comedian’s career suffered a major setback and a backlash from conservative groups at the time.
Page told DeGeneres that she was “grateful” to her, adding: “[B]ecause you did it in a time when it was much harder and much scarier.”
DeGeneres applauded Page’s actions and commended her on her speech, playing excerpts for her audience.
Page admitted being openly gay has affected every part of her life.
“It’s so nice to just be at work and talk about an ex…” she said, “to feel like you’re being yourself and then connect with people in the world…”
