The star's pal appeared to let slip the news as she celebrated Sam Esmail's Primetime Emmy nomination.

Actress Emmy Rossum has sparked rumours she is secretly married after reposting a congratulatory message from her Shameless co-star Shanola Hampton.

Emmy became engaged to her writer/director boyfriend Sam Esmail last August (15) after two years of dating.

However, the couple is speculated to already be husband and wife after Shanola sent a telling tweet on Thursday (14Jul16), as Esmail celebrated landing his first Primetime Emmy Awards nomination for his work on Mr. Robot, which earned a total of six nods.

Rossum expressed her joy at her man's achievement on social media, taking to Twitter to write, "So so so proud of you @samesmail !!!!"

Her close pal Shanola also sent her best wishes to 38-year-old Sam, but appeared to reveal that he and 29-year-old Emmy had quietly tied the knot in her celebratory tweet.

"To the genius that is @samesmail," she began, "CONGRATS on marrying my girl @emmyrossum, oh and on SIX #EmmyNominations!"

Rossum did not comment directly on the marriage reference, but shared the message on her Twitter page and replied with a smiley face emoji.

Esmail is personally nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series at the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards, while Mr. Robot will also compete for Outstanding Drama, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama for Rami Malek, Outstanding Music Composition for Mac Quayle, Outstanding Casting, and Outstanding Sound Mixing.

Rossum and Esmail met when he directed the actress in 2014 romantic comedy/drama Comet.

The Phantom of the Opera star was previously married to music executive Justin Siegel, but they split in 2010 after almost two years together.
