End of the road for Wagner and Katie on X Factor

Wagner is voted off the X Factor.
Wagner cheers despite being voted off X Factor.

Two of The X Factor's most controversial contestants have been kicked off the show.

Katie Waissel was given the boot after receiving the lowest share of the public vote.

She was closely followed by Wagner, who also ended up in the bottom three and had his dreams of pop stardom dashed when he lost out in a sing-off against Mary Byrne.

Fun-loving Wagner, whose presence on the show had started to irritate some of the judges who saw their own acts voted off instead of him, sang a simple version of Nat King Cole's Unforgettable but his position in the sing-off gave the judges their opportunity to kick him out.

Even mentor Louis Walsh voted to save his other act Mary after she sang a rousing version of Shirley Bassey's This Is My Life.

Dannii Minogue, who has been the most vocal about Wagner's lack of talent, said: "I want to keep the person in who has heart and soul and a fantastic voice so the person I'm sending home is Wagner."

Wagner reacted to his fate with typical good humour, quoting the Meatloaf song he sang on Halloween night: "Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone gone gone."

Katie was similarly gracious about leaving the show.

Her time on the show has seen her face the sing-off four times and a string of negative stories in the press, including one about her grandmother being a porn star and sex worker.

She said: "I just feel so grateful to have even gotten this far. Everyone's been so wonderful and amazing and I hope that I've inspired people that no matter how many knocks you get you still get up and you smile. "
