Ethan Hawke says his life is full of "compromise" now he is a father.
The actor has two children with his ex-wife Uma Thurman and two with his current spouse Ryan. When he was starting out in the industry money didn't seem important to him, but it is something he thinks about more and more now he has a family.
"I've never been a materialist. I was never interested in owning a Ferrari. I don't want to fly on private jets, I don't covet fancy shoes… But one of the weird things about having kids and supporting them is it infuses your life with compromise," he told British newspaper The Telegraph.
"There are problems that come when you have a certain level of celebrity that money really helps."
Although Ethan would have loved for his children to go to state school, his celebrity made that impossible. He fears they would have been teased about their upbringing, so instead they learn at the same place as other stars' kids.
In other areas Ethan won't back down though. He can't fathom why so many stars are happy to be associated with products as he thinks it takes away from their art.
"When I was younger, it was the absolute stamp of mediocrity to have a modelling contract... Today, everything is a commodity to be bought," he mused.
"Some of my favourite rock bands do ads, now... So it's confusing, the line has been crossed… I don't want to judge it, because I feel like as soon as I judge it, I'm rendering myself some kind of bull that needs to be put out to pasture."
