Eva Mendes feels she hasn’t quite “earned her stripes” when it comes to being a mother.

The 41-year-old actress gave birth to daughter Esmeralda, her first child with partner Ryan Gosling, in September last year. But as she prepares for the annual parental holiday, which takes place on May 10 in America, Eva admits she is still getting used to being a mum.

"There is no plan," Eva said of her plans for the day when asked about it during an interview on Access Hollywood Live on Tuesday, 5 May 2015

"I kind of feel like I haven't quite earned my stripes yet in a way. She's seven months old.”

Instead of letting Ryan and Esmeralda lavish her with attention, Eva is planning to celebrate the occasion with her own mother. The actress acknowledges that her mum, also called Eva, has had a difficult year and could do with spending the day with her family.

"This Mother's Day is definitely all about my mom," she said. "She's had a really hard year. My brother's sick, so it's all about my mom, honouring her. We're all going to go over to her house and bombard her with love."

The stunning star started dating Ryan in 2011 after the pair starred in the film The Place Beyond The Pines together.

Eva previously admitted that becoming a mother to Esmeralda has given her a whole new perspective on being a parent.

“Now I understand so much, my mother’s never gotten more 'I love you so much mommy' texts, I mean, randomly… ya, I get it now,” Eva told US TV show Extra.
