Ex-Brookside star Nicola Stephenson 'thrilled' to join Emmerdale cast

Former Brookside and Waterloo Road star Nicola Stephenson is back to the world of soap, joining Emmerdale to play village newcomer Tess.

Teaching assistant Tess will be introduced as a warm, self-assured character with a great heart - but her life will take an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with Emmerdale's long-serving vet Paddy Kirk, played by Dominic Brunt.

Last seen on our screens in the TV thriller Safe House, the 44-year-old has also starred in Holby City, The Chase, and Clocking Off. Her theatre credits include War Horse and His Girl Friday.

Stephenson said: "I'm thrilled to be joining the cast of Emmerdale. It's a British institution and I'm very excited about the storylines that they have planned for my character."

Kate Oates, Emmerdale series producer, added: "I am delighted to welcome an actress of Nicola's calibre to the show. We are keeping the exact details of Tess's storyline under wraps but it is safe to say she will mix things up in the village."

Stephenson starts filming this month, with her first scenes aired in the autumn.
