Ex-Corrie star Shobna Gulati to star in Anita And Me stage adaptation
Ex-Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati is set to star in an adaptation of Meera Syal's novel Anita And Me as it comes to stages across the UK.
The actress and presenter, 50, will be playing Daljit in the Goodness Gracious Me comedian's semi-autobiographical story about a British Punjabi girl growing up in a Black Country mining village in the 1970s.
Meena unexpectedly finds herself caught between two very different cultures when a new friend, Anita, walks into her life.
Already made into a film in 2002 - featuring Syal herself - the stage show opened in Birmingham and Stratford East a year ago.
But it will now be taken on a nationwide tour by the The Touring Consortium Theatre Company, including dates in Wolverhampton, Cheltenham, Blackpool, Nottingham, Bradford and Edinburgh, between February and April 2017.
Auditions will be held in each venue to fill out the cast with eight local actors in the production, directed by Roxana Silbert.
Adapted from the book by Tanika Gupta, it will also feature original music by the Ringham Brothers.
As well as being a writer, comedian, singer, journalist and producer, Syal, 55, became one of the UK's most prominent Indian television actors after her role playing the grandmother Ummi in The Kumars at No 42.
She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1997 and was last year appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to drama and literature.
