Fifth Harmony's Lauren Jauregui cited for pot possession

The singer was en route to Brazil, where the band is set to perform on Wednesday.

Fifth Harmony star Lauren Jauregui has been cited for marijuana possession following an airport incident in Virginia on Tuesday night (13Dec16).

The singer was passing through a security checkpoint at Washington Dulles International Airport when she was stopped and forced to submit to a secondary search.

Officials discovered a small bag of pot in her carry on bag, and terminal police were called over to deal with the situation.

Initial reports suggested Lauren had been arrested, but her attorney has since cleared up the claims, insisting she was not taken into custody.

"(Lauren was) simply given a citation for possession of marijuana and released on her own recognizance," reads a statement issued to TMZ.com. "This will not interfere with any future scheduled performances or activities."

Reports suggest she was planning to board a flight to Brazil, where the girl group is set to perform at the Vevo Brasil Fun Pop Festival on Wednesday (14Dec16).

The 20-year-old has yet to comment on the report, but she returned to Twitter on Wednesday morning to address a more pressing situation in the Middle East.

Making no mention of the airport incident, she pleaded with fans to join the call for action to help get activists and civilians in besieged Aleppo, Syria to safety following the violence which erupted between rebel forces and Syrian officials hours earlier, breaking a new ceasefire agreement.

She reposted a message about the humanitarian crisis on Instagram, and captioned it: "PLEASE READ AND HELP US... these people are being tortured and murdered as you read this, help."

Lauren also recently expressed her gratitude for her own blessings in a heartfelt note on Instagram, posted online on Sunday (11Dec16).

"Count your blessings and be GRATEFUL every morning you wake up..it changes your whole world when you focus on all the beautiful small blessings that comprise a happy soul," she wrote. "I'm SO grateful for my family, my bada** friends, my amazing team, the Girls, my beautiful fans, music, art, FOOD, water, an opportunity to help fix the world, I could go ON and ON because God has been so brilliant to me I have no idea why but I am blessed and feeling it hard today so I hope you can too!!"
