Finty Williams: Mum Judi's the best

Finty Williams doesn't want to use her mother Dame Judi Dench's career as a benchmark for her own.

The British actress is the only child of Judi and her late husband Michael Williams, and shares a very close bond with her mum.

As she has followed in her mum's footsteps and carved out a career in acting, Finty is forever asking her for tips.

"Yes, all the time! She's quite clever about it," Finty smiled to British magazine Grazia, adding her mum is "extraordinary beautiful".

"If she wasn't my mother, I'd want her to be my best friend."

Over Judi's 55-year career she has garnered widespread critical acclaim. She picked up the best supporting actress Oscar in 1999 for Shakespeare in Love, and has countless other awards and accolades to her name.

She was made a dame in 1998, and while 42-year-old Finty couldn't be more proud, she doesn't want to replicate Judi's career.

"I don't aspire to have her career or to be as talented as her, because I'd feel like I was shooting myself down in flames. If you have a parent who is that successful and set them as a benchmark, then everything is going to be disappointing," she admitted.

While Judi's professional life shows no signs of slowing down, she is having some problems with her health.

The 80-year-old recently talked about struggling with her sight, as she suffers with macular degeneration. She first spoke about the condition in 2012, but now has to rely on the help of others to learn her scripts and also to be her eyes when on the move.

"These days I can’t really travel on my own because I need someone to say, 'Look out, there’s a step here!' or else I fall all over the place like a mad, drunk lady," she told Radio Times magazine.
