Joanne Froggatt has confessed she doesn't want her Downton Abbey character Anna to find happiness with Bates just yet.
The 30-year-old actress plays the chief housemaid in Julian Fellowes' hit costume drama and the series saw an unlikely romance blossom between her and valet Bates, but circumstance kept them apart, and Joanne thinks that's more exciting.
She revealed: "As a character or a viewer I do want them to get together, but as an actress I kind of don't because it's more interesting.
"So maybe a few more spanners in the works before they finally do. But it would be nice if they finally do manage to."
After its runaway success, Downton fans are eagerly awaiting the second series of the ITV show, but Joanne insists she knows nothing of what Julian has in store for Anna and Bates.
She said: "None of us know officially anything at all, or unofficially. Except it's going to be some point in the First World War.
"Really because of the war - anything can happen. The whole hierarchy can change in some ways. The mixture of the relationships could be very different because of the war."
Joanne's new film In Our Name has been released in cinemas and on Curzon On Demand at www.curzoncinemas.com.
