Gosling for Downton chimney sweep?

Laura Carmichael has revealed her Christmas wish is for Ryan Gosling to make a cameo in Downton Abbey.

The 27-year-old actress plays unlucky-in-love Lady Edith, and confessed she'd love to work with the Hollywood heartthrob if he could be cast as Edith's next potential suitor.

Laura joked: "I really think it's only right that Ryan Gosling should join the cast.

"I leave it in the hands of (Downton creator and writer) Julian Fellowes. If he wants Ryan to come in as a very posh aristo, I'm fine with that. Or if he comes in as a chimney sweep, I'm also fine with that. I think audiences would agree."

But Laura revealed the writer of the show has pretty much told her that Edith is doomed when it comes to love.

She revealed: "It's never easy when it comes to love for Edith. Julian Fellowes said that some people are lucky and some people aren't, and Edith is one of those who isn't. She just can't meet a nice simple man."

But all the heartbreak has won her a lot of support from viewers.

Laura said: "It's really funny how people feel sorry for Edith. Everyone's been incredibly kind from the beginning. I think she's a really interesting character and people get that."

:: The Downton Abbey Christmas special is on ITV tonight (December 25).
