Green Wing star to be Doctor Who?

Julian Rhind-Tutt is in the running to play Doctor Who

Green Wing star Julian Rhind-Tutt is the latest name to be linked to the role of Doctor Who.

The 44-year-old actor - who most recently starred in BBC period drama The Hour as government spin doctor Angus McCain - was in the running to play the Time Lord the last time the character was recast in 2009, but lost out to Matt Smith.

Now insiders have told The Sun that Julian is on the shortlist again following Matt's decision to step down at the end of the year.

The new Doctor is expected to be revealed in the next few months and Matt's final appearance will be in the Christmas special.

Meanwhile, David Harewood could be in the running to be the first black Doctor Who after he was also tipped for the role.

The Homeland star said on Loose Women this week: "It would be really difficult to turn down. It's very exciting."

Rory Kinnear - who played MI5's Bill Tanner in recent James Bond films Quantum Of Solace and Skyfall - is currently the stand-out favourite for the role with odds of 1/1.

An insider at bookmakers William Hill revealed: "Just a few days ago we had to suspend the betting after we saw a huge gamble on Rory Kinnear and thought that he must have been offered the job.

"Things have calmed down, although Rory is still the favourite."

The Thick Of It's Chris Addison is also thought to be on the shortlist with odds of 3/1, followed by Cutting It's Ben Daniels at 5/1.
